Concessions of port infrastructures, installations and equipment in Spain

Marine transportation, essentially conceived as the long-distance transport of goods, and port facilities have played a major role in the general process of globalizing the Spanish economy. Spain has achieved figures that are certainly impressive. The ports of Algeciras Barcelona Valencia Bilbao and Tarragona receive the most traffic and have undertaken large expansion programs in the last few years in an attempt to adapt their capacity to expected growth in demand. They have also modernized their installations in order to become more competitive and to consolidate their role as hub ports, taking advantage of the strategic location of mainland Spain in relation to international maritime routes. Bilbao is an outstanding example and Barcelona and Valencia have followed suit. On the other hand, in the European Union, maritime routes have also been prioritized in the Trans-European Transport Network through the so-called highways of the sea program, designed to channel goods traffic in congested corridors. This report analyses the current Spanish concessions framework for port infrastructures, installations and equipment and its offers.
