Road infrastructure concessions in Spain
Expressway concessions have a long tradition in Spain since the first concession granted in Spain in 1960, the Guadarrama Tunnel, until a total of 3,257 km of tollways licensed in Spain for the year 2004. Concessionaire tollway companies are usually organized along Project Finance lines. But in recent years in Spain shadow toll concessions have started to be introduced applied to preexisting infrastructures, involving the introduction of a new way of managing the high-capacity road network, in line with the needs of quality and safety of the road network. On the other hand, the institutional framework in existence in Spain has allowed the development of a business sector specializing in these operations, which in turn has led to the significant international presence of Spanish companies in the field of expressways. Spanish consultancy, technological, construction, and concessionaire companies are world leaders in the management of transportation infrastructures and successfully study, plan, build, and operate expressways in a large number of countries. This report analyses the current Spanish concessions framework for road infrastructure and its offers.
