Spanish fashion has become one of the largest investors in New York City’s Soho commercial district.
According to the Spanish business journal Cinco Días, Desigual opened its first store in the U.S. in Soho in mid-April. The 300 sq. meter, two-floor establishment, is yet another to add to the list of Spanish fashion stores in Soho, one of the most highly trafficked shopping areas in the world.
Other Spanish brands like Tous decided to take advantage of the economic crisis by expanding their U.S. business. It plans to launch 6 more stores in the next two months.
Years ago, the shoe stores Camper and Jaime Mascaro were among the first to bet on Soho. Since then, other designers like Agatha Ruiz de la Prada; Custo (with two stores in the U.S.); Mango, which opened a store in the landmark Singer building in November of 2007; and Zara, with 6 stores throughout the city, have joined the list of Soho shops.
Desigual´s new store is on the same street on Broadway as Zara, and Isak Andic´s boutique faces Mango. Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Apple, Burberry and Donna Karan are among the designers that have stores in Soho.
