Six of every hundred liters of wine consumed in the world are from Spain


Six of every one hundred liters of wine consumed worldwide in 2008 were Spanish. These are data from a study by the consulting firm Nielsen for the Spanish Observatory for the Wine Market.

The report notes that the presence of Spanish wine in different food market channels in the U.S., UK, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland and Mexico in 2008 stood at 6.2 per cent, reaching 4.354 million liters.

In the U.S., one of the largest markets, the Spanish presence represents 1.1% of total wine consumed, while in value reached 1.7%. Most requested wines in the country were red (42.4%) followed by rosés (39%). In terms of average price, was at 6,73€, the most expensive, after France, of the wines consumed in the U.S. market.

In other markets like Mexico, Spanish wines accounted for 15.1% in volume and 20.6% in value. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, the Spanish wines reached 14% in volume and 13% in value. In other countries like Britain, the percentage of presence in volume stood at 9.8% behind Australian, American, French and Italian wines.

 

In Germany the Spanish quota stood at7,6% in volume (10% in value), while in the Neetherlands of the 273 millon liters consumed, 7,9% were from Spain.
